Pedro Cortes and Reyna Ramirez-Cortes, originally from the states of Hidalgo and Tlaxcala, central region of Mexico, are the owners of Taco de Oro Mexican Restaurant. They came to the United States in 1991, in search of a better future for their family.

After previously owning two other small businesses, and with over 30 years of restaurant experience, Pedro wanted to give the community the experience of authentic homemade Mexican food. In 2000, he started his first food business by opening several taco stands in the Copperfield area. Eventually, he decided to open a “sit down” restaurant to create more jobs and to be able to give back to the community. Taco De Oro Mexican Restaurant opened in November of 2008.

A locally owned restaurant, daughters Janet, Carina, Olga and Karen, all of whom live in the Cypress/Copperfield community and attended Cy-Fair ISD schools, each take on a role in the family business.

After exploring possible locations, Pedro considered the Barker Cypress and Tuckerton Road area. “Although the area was just starting to develop, he quickly knew that this is where we needed to be. To quote him, ‘God gave me this feeling,’” shares Janet.

One cannot help but be impressed by the extensive menu. Janet explains, “Guest comments and feedback on the variety and quality of our food determines what makes it on our menu. The Tijuana Style Birria menu is what we are mostly known for, as well as our specialty, the traditional Hidalgo-Style Lamb barbacoa.”

What makes Taco De Oro so popular with Cypress diners? “We believe that it is the home-like atmosphere,” reflects Janet. “Most of our clientele are repeat and loyal guests that have been supporting us for many years. We feel truly humbled and blessed with the continued out pouring of love and support we receive from our amazing TDO family.” Frequent customers such as Rick and Liz Skinner and Joe and Jeanette Callahan are quick to recommend TDO. “We each have our favorite dishes; Joe loves the Birria Queso tacos and our son Brian orders the Fajita Poblano,” comments Jeanette.

“The bar features a Margarita of the Month. Olga creates a different flavor monthly, offered from 11am – close. This month’s Green Apple Margarita tastes like a green Jolly Rancher,” confides Janet.

We wondered; when the family comes together for dinner, who prepares the meal? “Mom enjoys cooking for her family, especially for the grandchildren. It’s like a tortilleria,” laughs Janet. “That’s her love language!”
