Looking for a great steak? Houston certainly has its share of premier steakhouses such as Brenner’s, Killen’s, and Del Frisco’s. While you’re likely to enjoy your meal at any of those fine establishments, the prospect of paying $50 for a single ribeye, dressing up, driving for miles and paying a babysitter might just be enough to keep you at home on a Friday night. Truth be told, one doesn’t have to leave Cypress to find an awesome steak dinner at an extraordinary price. Just head down the road a piece to the VFW Post 8905 for their First-Friday-of-the-Month Steak Night.
“The VFW Steak Night is part of our community outreach program. We do it as a community service to bring people from the area together. We are an open post; you do not need to be a veteran or a member to visit. We get a mix of people from all walks of life. Also, the post is a great place to find resources to help veterans,” explains VFW Post 8905 Junior Vice Commander, Joshua Wilcox.
“Post Commander Howie Wright, Mike Teasdale and I usually cook the steaks. Howie and Mike are experienced grill masters, and have been cooking competitively in the area for a number of years. We use choice cut ribeye steaks. Anywhere from 100 to 150 steaks are sold each steak night,” reports Wilcox. “While the veterans cook the steaks, other volunteers from the auxiliary, and family members, prep the side dishes. Cypress Area Eats, (a Community of Facebook food enthusiasts), provides the desserts. CAE has been supporting our local veterans these past two years through fundraisers, bringing diners to the First Friday Steak Nights and charitable events. We’ve been voted Best Steak Night in Harris County by CAE!” comments Wilcox proudly.
Metta Marie Archilla, Cypress Area Eats Admin., says that her group is passionate about Steak Night and the VFW Post 8905 veterans. “Steak night at the VFW Post 8905 is something near and dear to many of our hearts… to hang out with our local veterans that have served to protect us, and as we have grown to protect and serve these wonderful souls. Plus, that‘s one helluva steak!”
“For the price of $12, guests get a huge ribeye steak, cooked to order, a loaded baked potato, a garden salad, and a dessert. Beer and wine can be purchased from the VFW Post Bar, or you may BYOB, (Bring Your Own Bottle). Plates will be served until we run out of steaks,” states Donna Morse, 2018 – 1029 VFW Auxiliary President.
Veterans John McIntyre and Cameron Clark, together with Cameron’s wife, Paula, attended the August Steak Night. The men met at the VA and had attended a previous monthly event. An Army Infantryman for 8 years, 11 months, McIntyre completed tours of duty in Bosnia, Germany, and Iraq. When asked about his steak, the veteran pronounced it “Impeccable! I loved it! Medium rare, just the way I like it!”
Clark, served in both the Marine and Navy, “Thirty years, 4 tours, The Philippines, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan.” After one visit, he couldn’t wait to persuade his wife to accompany him. “No matter where you come from, you’ll leave here happy and full,” he stated.
The monthly Steak Night will not be held in September, as the VFW post 8905 Auxiliary will be hosting its Annual BBQ Cook Off, Friday and Saturday, September 7-8, 2018, 11am – ? BBQ sandwiches and sausages on a stick will be served starting at 11am on Saturday, with the Saturday Night Dance starting at 4pm.
